Materials We Use

What is Sterling Silver?

Sterling silver is an alloy of copper and silver (925 parts silver and 75 parts copper). Pure silver is so soft and ductile that one gram (about the size of a pea) can be drawn out as a wire more than a mile long. This makes it too soft for jewellery purposes, so several centuries ago someone made an alloy of silver and copper. This hardens the silver so the jewellery artisan can work it.

What is Gold Filled?

Pure gold is 24K, and is too soft to use in most jewellery making. Gold Filled refers to the process in which a layer of gold (10K or higher) is mechanically bonded under heat and pressure to one or more surfaces of supporting base metal (usually jeweller’s brass), then rolled or drawn to a given thickness.

The finished product thus has a surface layer of gold of the appropriate karat weight. This is very thick compared to gold plate. The layer of gold, by law, must be at least 1/20 by weight of the total product. This is commonly marked as 14/20 which means 1/20 of the weight is 14K gold.

Why we use 14/20 Gold Filled Wire

We use only 14K Gold Filled wire and beads for our gold ear fashions because of its beauty and durability. Gold Filled items are considered lifetime products, and the gold layer will not wear off as it will in electroplated products. Many of the antique jewellery pieces that are so popular today are Gold Filled (once commonly known as rolled gold). They have retained the patina of fine jewellery, as will the jewellery we create for you.

About Our Beads

My mother always said that you can’t make good shortbread without using real  butter. So here’s my real butter.

  • Beads 01 through 04 are made from either Sterling Silver or 14K Gold Filled. For more information about these metals, see above.
  • Rainbow Foil, Bead 10, is our most popular. This foil-coated bead displays different colours, ranging from greens and blues to pinks and purples, as it is rotated.
  • Rainbow Hematite, Bead 13, is an actual Hematite bead with a coating that makes it resemble the popular Titanium bead used in body piercing.
  • Hematite, Bead 15, is the dark slate gray stone that was known in the 50s and 60s as Alaska Black Diamond.
  • Beads 20 through 30 are Swarovski Crystal Pearls. These are genuine crystal beads with a durable coating.
  • Beads 40 through 82, are genuine European crystal beads from both Austria and the Czech Republic.

We take pride in using only quality ingredients in our products.

Cleaning and Storing your Jewellery

Sterling Silver will look its best if stored in a dry environment. Keep it in a zip-close plastic bag with the air pushed out. To keep it dry, add a piece of chalk, a package of silica gel, or other drying agent.

Gold does not tarnish, but will look its best when cleaned with mild soap and water and dried with a soft cloth.

We recommend the Sunshine Cloth to clean all of your Silver and Gold jewellery.
